About Meadowbank Wines

Meadowbank Wines is a family-run vineyard in Tasmania’s Derwent Valley, established in 1976 by Gerald and Sue Ellis on a former sheep farm. Set on the banks of the Meadowbank River, the estate is known for its striking landscape and cool-climate terroir—sandy soils over iron-rich “coffee rock.” Today, the vineyard is managed by the Ellis family with winemaker Peter Dredge, who joined in 2015 and helped shape Meadowbank into one of Tasmania’s most respected producers. Their approach to viticulture is largely organic, with a focus on sustainable, minimal-intervention practices that express the purity of their site.

The range includes Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Gamay, Syrah, and limited sparkling releases, all noted for their finesse and vibrant Tasmanian freshness. Meadowbank’s Pinot Noir recently won the 2025 Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy for Best Young Red, cementing its reputation for quality and innovation. The estate doesn’t have a traditional cellar door but offers private vineyard experiences and long-table lunches by appointment. Their elegant, cool-climate wines pair beautifully with dishes like duck, lamb, and seasonal Tasmanian produce.
